Case Study 3

PC Networking, Wireless Internet Access and Security

Customer D had previously set up his own home PC network for two desktop computers and a laptop, using a small Ethernet hub and some network fly-leads. He could browse the internet from the main desktop PC, but not from the others.  Also, he wanted to be able to use the laptop from anywhere in the house and not be restricted by the network cabling. Customer 4 purchased a wireless broadband router and had a go at setting it up himself.  Despite the installation guide saying ‘15 minutes setup’, things all went a bit ‘Pete Tong’. “I asked Steve to sort me out and I now have a working network with all PCs on the Internet. I can use my laptop from the comfort of my settee AND be confident that the neighbours cannot access any of it. My wife can also use the Internet from her PC at the same time.”

Customer E had two home computers, each with separate modem connections to the internet for browsing and email. They upgraded to Broadband on the main PC and wondered if they could connect the second PC to it as well.  The older PC is in a daughter’s bedroom and some distance from the main PC.   Dave said: “Rather than running lengthy cables, Steve put a wireless card into each PC and configured them to share the main PC’s broadband connection.  Steve also upgraded the old PC to Windows XP and it is noticeably faster than it was on Windows 98.  We are very pleased with it.”
